Despite the export difficulties encountered over the last two years, the results of the REP sectors in 2022 are considered generally positive due to the tonnage collected in Reunion and Mayotte, all sectors combined, in progress compared to 2021.

The territory's eco-organizations continued their momentum with a total of 58,631,4 tonnes of waste collected in 2022, an overall increase of 3% compared to the previous year. This is what emerges from the latest assessment of the REP sectors, organized every year since 2010 by the Import and Trade Union of Reunion Island (SURE)*, in collaboration with ADEME. The presentation of the figures brought together, September 26, all stakeholders concerned, for a new inventory of the sectors operating on the island : eco-organisms, institutions, companies, consular chambers, communities, mixed waste treatment unions, associations and other SICR member companies holding products falling under extended producer responsibility. The president of the SICR, Philippe-Alexandre Rebboah, recalled, especially, that in 2022 the union had been mandated by the Réunion Region and the prefecture of Mayotte to study the feasibility and coordinate the chartering of a boat specially dedicated to the direct export of waste. The ship left Reunion at the end of October 2022 with nearly 4,200 tonnes of waste on board., including a large part of hazardous waste. This operation made it possible to reduce the stocks of waste which had been accumulating for months due to lack of maritime freight., forcing several sectors to interrupt their collection such as Ecosystem and Corepile. It is despite this unfavorable context for the sectors that the overall collection tonnage has increased..

Reuse and repair integrated into the REP balance sheet
The assessment of the REP sectors has been carried out since 2019 by the REP Indian Ocean inter-industry platform., which includes two territorial devices : one for Reunion and the other for Mayotte. Note the arrival in 2022 on the Éco Agri Réunion platform, the local eco-organization in charge of collecting non-organic agricultural waste (can of phytosanitary products, fertilizer bags, etc.). This year, The REP review was held on the sidelines of the European Sustainable Development Week, which took place this year over three weeks from September 18 to October 8. This is also to remind us that waste management is a crucial point for the establishment of a circular economy in the territory.. An animation was thus on the program with the presentation of the balance sheet, with the theme “Everyday gestures and the link with EPR”, to raise participants’ awareness of corporate social responsibility (RSE) and the sustainable development goals set by the UN 2030 Agenda. Referent for businesses and the circular economy of the regional directorate for the Indian Ocean of ADEME, Roselyne Boucheron also underlined that the repair and reuse assistance funds, intended to extend the lifespan of objects, would be operational from 2024. The annual reports of the REPs will now also evaluate the repair and reuse actions of the sectors.
