The Sagis group measured the morale and confidence of the inhabitants of Reunion in this year 2022. What emerges is a Reunionese version of the “French paradox”, namely the accumulation of a rather positive vision of one's personal life with a rather negative vision of society.
Calculated each month by INSEE, the synthetic household confidence indicator does not take into account the populations of the French Overseas Territories and Territories. Hence the interest in the “Morale and confidence in Reunion Island” survey, the results of which the Sagis group has just made public. The Reunion survey is coupled with a comparative assessment of the morale of the inhabitants of the five overseas departments (Meeting, Mayotte, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Guyana). Like 15 years ago, the 2022 survey reveals a vast majority feeling of personal happiness (60% happy and 25% very happy). Paradoxically, a majority considers that society is doing rather badly and mentions a personal and general situation which is deteriorating. How can we feel good in a society where everything is going wrong? ? It is, en substance, a local variation, what metropolitan polling institutes have long referred to as the “French paradox”. “It’s the feeling of being rather happy associated with the feeling that society is doing rather badly and that the economic situation, both on a personal and general level, deteriorates”, observe Philippe Fabing, president and director of studies of the Sagis group. A possible explanation ? “The feeling of happiness refers to the intimate sphere : it takes into account the material situation, but not only. It is when we consider our situation more particularly on the material level that the perception becomes more negative. »
