The Eclocéa hatchery was inaugurated at the end of April in Jean-Petit, in the heights of Saint-Joseph.
The Les Fermiers du Sud cooperative, which brings together around forty poultry producers, to invest 5,5 million euros in this structure with a production capacity of 200,000 chicks per week. Huguette Bello, president of the region, and its first vice-president, Patrick Lebreton, participated in the cutting of the inaugural Eclocéa ribbon. Hatchery promoters intend to reduce imports of hatching eggs and chicks. They are also positioning themselves in competition with Couvée d’Or, long-established hatchery, which was until now the only one in all of Overseas and belongs to the Urcoopa group. They also had the ambition to create a second poultry slaughterhouse, after that of Étang-Salé also controlled by Urcoopa. The project did not receive the public support that would have enabled its success.
