The MASE standard helps companies of all sizes and in all sectors of activity to improve safety and health at work and the environment (SSE) thanks to a management system to reduce workplace accidents.
In 2019 in Reunion, 5,643 work accidents with lost time were recorded, i.e. on average a little more than 29 work accidents per 1,000 employees. On the island, the frequency of workplace accidents has been increasing since 2014 : + 7,3% on average per year*. In order to act against this situation, a collective of local companies having already obtained MASE certification will create the MASE Indian Ocean association with the support of the research and consulting firm Isodom. The MASE is a benchmark equivalent to the SSE label (security, health, environment) supported by regional non-profit associations bringing together more than 6,000 members in mainland France. Overseas, a MASE association is already present in Martinique, in Guadeloupe and Guyana, as well as in Ivory Coast and Senegal. for example, the large maritime port of Guyana is MASE certified ; likewise, the Guadeloupe airport company, Caribbean pole. Nicolas Chouteau, general secretary of MASE France and International, the structure overseeing the whole, were in Reunion in April for the establishment of the future Reunion association. An information meeting on the MASE standard was organized at the Village by CA. In particular to explain how the MASE repository, whose level is as high as the ISO 45001 standard, is more accessible to VSE-SMEs, because more concrete and pragmatic. One of the new Reunion companies certified MASE last month, APR, EDF subcontractor, has five employees.
A guarantee for order givers
In the meeting, ABC Scaffolding, E2R, EDF, THE, TotalEnergies, SRPP, Vivo Energy are already MASE certified. One of the goals of MASE is in fact to provide industrial contractors with the guarantee that their service providers responsible for the maintenance of their installations and equipment meet the work safety requirements to which they themselves are subject. same subject to regulation. The industrial perimeter is not the only one concerned : being a continuous improvement approach, MASE applies just as much to service activities such as guarding, cleaning, logistic, transportation, etc. Between small and large businesses, “MASE allows us to share a common security language”, pleaded Nicolas Chouteau.
Insurance for fewer and less serious accidents
“Recognition by certification following an audit provides evidence that the company has implemented an organization and an HSE management system, and that this allows complete and effective management of these different aspects”, explains Nicolas Chouteau. The field orientation of the repository, with clearly defined requirements, is the strength of MASE. At national scale, two thirds of the members of the ten regional MASE associations have fewer than 50 employees, and 17% of companies already certified have fewer than ten employees. The higher membership cost paid by user companies reduces the cost of annual membership to around 300 euros for participating companies.. As for the results, the national leaders of MASE do not hesitate to affirm this, supporting indicators : “The MASE provides the certainty of reducing the number and severity of workplace accidents. »
