Six out of ten defibrillators installed present anomalies, alert Frédéric Gaudin, co-founder of Star Aid, company specializing in distribution, maintenance of automated external defibrillators, as well as training in first aid and prevention of professional risks.
In the meeting, there are approximately 2,000 deaths from sudden cardiac arrest each year. In France, between 40,000 and 50,000 people are victims of sudden death. It is within the framework of the fight against sudden death by cardiac arrest that the Ministry of Health has initiated, since 2007, actions to promote the development of the implementation of automated external defibrillators (DAE) throughout the territory and their ease of access. Law No. 2018-527 of June 28, 2018 strengthened this regulatory framework. Owners of establishments open to the public (ERP) are required to hold an AED. Outside of ERP, anyone is free to install an AED. But the 2018 decree does not require ERP owners to use a professional for the maintenance of their device. Result : according to a summary published last April in mainland France by the association for the census and location of defibrillators (ARLoD), 60% of the devices audited “presented an anomaly that could lead to a malfunction”. In more than 30% of cases, consumables (the battery and the electrodes) were “expired”.
Solutions to save lives
Another brake reported by Frédéric Gaudin : “The fear of not knowing how to use the AED. » Among other achievements, The aim of first aid training is to become familiar with the device, understand the procedures to follow and acquire the reflexes necessary to intervene effectively in an emergency situation. Between equipment and training, Frédéric Gaudin and his team provide solutions to save lives. They put their skills at the service of establishments open to the public, so that they comply with current regulations, and, for ERPs already equipped with defibrillators, that they have their operation checked by safe and recognized professionals.
