Recharged by the rise in world sugar prices since the start of the war in Ukraine, Tereos Indian Ocean is ready to put six million euros on the table to participate in the revival of the cane industry. Its general director Philippe Labro announced it on March 20 in the Reunion daily press.. The catastrophic result of the last campaign (1,3 million tonnes of cane) and the gloomy prospects for the 2023 campaign are indeed giving rise to growing concern about the sustainability of this culture. 1,500 hectares have been lost in the last two years, reveals the industrial group, while the erosion of the cane sole had been reduced to 200 hectares per year since the start of the previous decade. Tereos Indian Ocean specifies that part of the envelope of six million euros will help planters to buy their fertilizer, whose prices have exploded since 2021. The use of the other part will be decided collectively by the inter-profession, according to Philippe Labro. As the 2023 Cup approaches, which will start in July, the sector is facing additional difficulties. Added to the increase in the price of fertilizers is the progressive ban on herbicide molecules., which generates a drop in field yields, and the recurring lack of labor at harvest time. And if the climatic conditions have been generally favorable for the regrowth of the cane in recent months, the south of the island is facing a very severe drought which will affect tonnages.
