Réunion had 861,200 inhabitants on January 1, 2019, according to figures for the “legal population” recently published by INSEE. More recent figures are estimates only. Our island is the 25th French department in terms of population. The INSEE study also reveals various variations from one micro-region to another between 2013 and 2019.. Over the period, St Denis, Sainte-Marie and Sainte-Suzanne recorded annual population growth of 1,2%, twice the overall growth of the island. The municipalities of Cinor had 212,000 inhabitants on January 1, 2019. Vice versa, the population of the West decreased by 0,1% between 2013 and 2019, while she progressed from 0,5% per year during the previous period. Saint-Paul notably lost 1,000 inhabitants (-0,2%) in six years. In the South, population growth (0,6%) is close to the regional average, but is decreasing compared to the period 2008-2013. Finally, population growth is running out of steam in the East : +0,3% per year, four times less than during the previous period.
