2021, an important year for Grand Sud Productions

Capri-Sun replaces its plastic straws with recyclable paper straws. More, this is not the only news from the brand, as Benoît Rimbaud explains, general director of Grand Sud Productions.

How was 2020 ?

This complicated year required the entire Grand Sud Productions team to have a real capacity for adaptation and great agility.. With a first half very handicapped by the two months of confinement. Then a very buoyant second half thanks to the Mega Sports Game in supermarkets and a new allocation of resources for Reunion consumers prevented from leaving the island during the holidays. Exports also made up for the delay observed at the end of June 2020 in the second quarter.. Au final, the year was positive for the company and very educational for the whole team !

How is 2021 looking? ?

We put all the chances on our side. But the health crisis remains current and we are still exposed to decisions or events which may modify the environment and the behavior of the Reunion market or the markets to which we export.. In all cases, it will be an important year for us.

New features are planned ?

Exactly. And for Capri-Sun, This is really important because, since 2015 and with the arrival of the Monster Alarm, we didn't get out. 2021 is marked by the launch, since April, of Mango Passion perfume in 20 cl, product Nou la Fé, manufactured in our Etang Salé factory. We have high hopes, this cocktail should be among our bestsellers very quickly. 2021 will also be the year of the real launch of the Ice Tea Peach perfume. In June 2020, we maintained the release of this perfume which had a very good debut, but with numerous stock shortages linked to Covid disruptions.

Capri-Sun with a 100% recyclable paper straw

Straw replacement is underway across Europe. Anticipating the ban on plastic straws from July 1, this shift has been effective in Reunion for Grand Sud Productions since April.

The paper straw is a project that the Capri-Sun research and development team has been working on for several years. It has been tested by consumer panels to ensure the new straw works as well as the previous plastic straw, with the same performance and equivalent hygiene conditions, but with more benefits for the environment. Made with FSC certified paper, this white paper straw marks a new essential step in the company’s sustainability journey. Déjà, the Capri-Sun sachet uses five times less material than a plastic bottle of similar volume. From a decade, the changes made to this bag made it possible to use 33% less material. And Capri-Sun is currently working on the development of a fully recyclable sachet, which should be in place by 2025 at the latest. “The paper straw is a key step for us, but we don't stop there. We worked hard to find new materials and technologies to create a fully recyclable pouch for our iconic fruit drink. We look forward to announcing the rollout of this initiative as well,” says Roland Weening, PDG de Capri Sun Group.

Tree planting in Uganda

Since this year, Capri-Sun has also committed to planting the same number of trees each year as are used to produce paper straws., as part of its wider sustainability and environmental ambitions. For this purpose, From 2021, Capri-Sun will join forces with the OneTreePlanted association, which is implementing a vast reforestation program around the world.. “We have the opportunity to plant diverse trees in Uganda and support the Jane Goodall Institute’s efforts to protect and restore the habitat of endangered chimpanzees and other wildlife,” says Julia Straschil., Capri-Sun brand director.
